The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead is one of the oldest organizations in the Village. It has its roots in the service offered by women of this Village and of Hempstead during World War I. These women had found "strength, pride and a deep sense of kinship with each other, which they were reluctant to lose when peace came." They wanted to continue working with each other and serving others, but this time they wanted to continue serving their communities while also providing cultural activities. They have been doing this since 1919.
In 1991, no less, a person then Mayor John F. McGowan attended one of their programs. Mayor McGowan had been aware of the Community Club, but had never had any involvement with it. He was invited to a program late in his term and in his own words it was an experience. He says, "I met some delightful people at the meeting but more importantly, a perusal of their by-laws indicated that the objective of the club was to promote the welfare of their home communities." Mayor McGowan suggested to his successor to visit this group of positive people. Garden City is lucky to have groups like this and next year will mark the 90th Anniversary of The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead.
Happy birthday wishes go to Bette Walhen, who will be celebrating her special day on the 13th, and to Rose Forgione, who will do the same on the 17th of October, and also to Adele Raffo who will blow out the candles on her cake just about this time. May all the birthday ladies have a great day and a year filled with health and happiness with many more to come.
We have a fine group of folks celebrating their wedding anniversaries at this time and they are: Mary and Herb Polak, who do their celebrating on the 16th, and to Claire and Dick Burns, who will do ditto on the 19th. May you all enjoy a wonderful day and a year filled with good health and much happiness and may you celebrate many more years of wedded bliss.
There was much toe tapping this past Wednesday at the Garden City Library and it was to the tune of the talk by a former Rockette. Enjoying the Community Club program were: Ruth La Basco, Phyllis Dima, Jennie Catania, Marjorie Maher, and Bea Mercadante among a number of others.
We were sorry to learn of the passing of Walter Farrell. He was a long time resident of Garden City and took an interest in many things. Walter was retired from the New York Police Department and held several citations of honor. Our prayers and sympathy go to his wife of many years Alicia and to his children and Grandchildren. Our thoughts are with them.
