Print Exhibition On Display

2008-10-10 / Community

Adelphi University Assistant Professor Carson Fox presents "Dangerous Women," an exhibition of contemporary female printmakers who push the technical envelope, both in terms of technique and material, on display in the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, from Sunday, October 5, 2008 to Wednesday, November 12, 2008. A free reception will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.

This exhibition explores the concept of danger in numerous personal ways; from Brieana Ruias' extravagant screen printed toile titled "Rabble-Rousing" to Barbara Madsen's disturbingly playful photogravures of artificial eyes, to Sarah Peter's graphic portraits of free flowing tears. Lynne Allen's deft mix of print techniques promotes a truly dangerous woman, her deceased Native American great grandmother: a poet, historian, and protofeminist. Gail Deery creates prints and artist books inspired by the perilous balance between nature's demands and our attempts to control it. Tunisian-born artist Emna Zghal examines the subject of combat in her artist book, Cultures of War, while her emotionally evocative, color saturated prints, such as "Wound Labyrinth," further her investigation into the subject of conflict. Carson Fox's images of Victorian hands at risk of being injured inspire an odd mix of anxious amusement. Lastly, Cynthia Thompson's work coolly navigates the dangerous state of restrained desire, while suggesting a simmering just beneath the surface.

The Fine Arts Exhibition Hall is open Sunday through Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Richard Vaux, director of exhibitions, at (516) 877-4462.
