Adelphi To Host Spoken Word Artists
Adelphi University welcomes to the stage nationally acclaimed spoken word artists Alix Olson and Staceyann Chin to present "Radical Words of Our Revolution." The two poets will deliver back to back performances on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event celebrating the power of spoken word, a style of performance poetry where lyrics, prose, or stories are spoken rather than sung, is sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Straight Student Alliance with support from ICAN: Imagine Change Act Now Collaboration Project. The performance is one of a number of campus events scheduled for National Coming Out Week, a civil awareness campaign aimed at promoting the discussion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues.
Alix Olson, an internationally touring folk poet, who is according to Utne Magazine, "the spoken word diva everyone's talking about," made her debut with a title at the 1998 National Poetry Slam. She has produced two spoken word albums, released with companion books of poetry, and an award-winning documentary. She has performed at numerous clubs, festivals, and theaters, and more than 200 universities. Twice headlining the HBO hit series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam, Olson is returning to Adelphi for an encore performance after a well-attended event last fall.
Staceyann Chin, a favorite at New York City's famous Nuyorican Poets Café, has won poetry slam contests around the nation and delivered highly acclaimed theater performances around the globe, including London, Denmark, Germany, and South Africa. She was featured on HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam for two consecutive seasons and performed as an original cast member in the Tony Award-winning Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She has published a number of poetry books, including her most recent, Stories Surrounding My Coming. Chin will be making her first appearance at Adelphi.
The performance is open to the public, but there is a fee to enter. Adelphi students, faculty, and staff will be charged $3.00; the fee for the general
public is $5.00. For more
