Fired Up Flames Scorch Mustangs
John Dehler on D
In the early match, at Skelos Field, in RVC on Saturday morning, the GC Flames played a cracker of a match against the Rockville Centre Mustangs. Garden City consistently ran down every ball put into their zone by the Mustangs and used quick pinpoint passing to start their numerous counterattacks. Those quick attacks were rewarded early as Tim Josephs found the back of the net eight minutes into the match. It would prove to be the only goal that the Flames would need. Goalkeeper Nick DeMoura saw to that, with assistance later by backup keeper Greg Pahlavi. It was DeMoura & Co.'s third clean sheet in a row. Fantastic!
Harry Furey, was not to be denied on any play that came his way. He led the GC defense in heroic fashion. Furey played every Mustang ball he won back to the GC midfielders who took the attack back to the RVC end. He ran, he danced, he bobbed, and he weaved. Harry played like a lion, all of which earned him the well- deserved Man of the Match honors.
GC goal scorers on the day were, Brett Alvarez, Tim Collins, Chris Costigan, Tim Josephs (2) and Billy Trimmer. It is worth noting that the Bill Trimmer goal was a cannon blast from almost 30 yards out that found the top right corner of the RVC goal. Diving high to his left, the RVC keeper was helpless to keep this rocket out of his net. Always an imposing centre midfielder, it is hoped that Mr. "T" will enjoy his new role as goal scorer. Score early, score often, the more the merrier! For those who missed it, the final score was RVC Mustangs 0-6 GC Flames.
