U-10 Wildcats Defeat Massapequa and East Meadow
Gabby Rogers in the open field
The U10 Garden City Wildcats continued their winning ways the last two weekends with an impressive shutout of the Massapequa Lightning. At the newly turfed Field of Dreams the Wildcats demonstrated why they are a force to be reckoned with in the Nassau Major Division this fall.
As the match got underway, Garden City played a textbook game of possession with the ball. In the 5th minute, Kate Farrell's hustle beat the goalkeeper to the ball deep in the penalty box and slid a cross over to an open Taylor Gladd who slotted home to put the Wildcats up early, 1-0. Farrell was involved in the scoring again moments later as she scored on a nice right footed shot and the lead was 2-0. Defenders Devon Heaney, Megan Seel, Celia Concannon kept their composure very well and when under pressure played back to goalkeeper Emma Wieland as an outlet. Gabriella Rogers located Kelly Donovan with a pin point pass and Donovan deposited the ball in the net for a 3-0 Garden City lead which took them to halftime, but not before Celia Concannon unloaded a blast which the Massapequa goalkeeper managed to save. Likewise, Kelly George upon receiving a nice pass from Jacqui Brattan, unleashed a shot that struck the post and ricochet wide. In the second half, Maggie Casey and Marlee Rich both gave lessons in shielding the ball and kept their opponents at bay. Celia Concannon, playing goalie in the second half, made a great kick save in goal to preserve the shutout after Emma W had scored two goals and Megan Seel notched another for a nice victory.

Previously, in Week 3 action, the Wildcats hosted the East Meadow Blue Stars and came away with a 6-2 victory. As they showed in their previous matches, the Wildcats attacking style has kept the opposition on their heels having scored 24 goals for a plus 18 goal differential this Fall. Celia Concannon got things going for the Wildcats by scoring the game's first goal off a nice pass from Maggie Casey. The two teams then engaged in a battle for ball control. Emma and Marlee were in the thick of the midfield duel. Defenders Kelly D and Megan played very well in front of Taylor G in the Wildcats net. Just past the midway point of the half Megan Seel's speed created a 1 v 1 with the Blue Storm goalkeeper. The goalie made the initial save, but Kelly George, crashing the goal gained possession of the ball and shot it into the net for a 2-0 Garden City lead. As the second half began, East Meadow stepped up its attack and was determined to turn the tide showing an excellent possession game. However, Kelly D found Kate in open space to the left of the Blue Storm net. Kate has been finishing her shots all season and did so again and the Garden City lead was 3-0. East Meadow would not fold and minutes later scored a goal to get on the board. After this, the Wildcats took over and constantly pressured the Blue Storm defense. Celia Concannon scored her second goal of the game to increase the lead to 4-1. Gabriella Rogers, Devon Heaney and Jacqui Brattan played tight defense in their end and they were first to the ball on nearly every occasion while the midfielders came back to support them. Kate Farrell took advantage of a Blue Storm defensive mistake and made them pay scoring her second goal of the game and she wasn't done yet as moments later she completed her hat trick by intercepting a goalie clearence in the East Meadow defensive end and firing it into the net to put the game away. A final goal for East Meadow made it 6-2 and the Wildcats had their third successive victory, which kept them in a first place tie in the division with Albertson Red 98 Fury and New Hyde Park Lady Lions. The Wildcats host the Farmingdale Shamrocks this Saturday, October 4th and then it is on to Windsor the following week ! Go Wildcats!
