GCHS Volunteers Clean Up Beach
GCHS volunteers get ready to clean up the beach
On Saturday, September 20th, volunteers from Garden City High School's Hands on Protecting the Environment (H.O.P.E.) club went to Point Lookout beach to tidy up the shoreline. Long Island beaches are infamous for being strewn with trash, and as the weather gets colder, H.O.P.E. members find that it is easier to clean up the beaches without bothering beachgoers. The group picked up bundles of fishing line, empty soda cans, Styrofoam, and other trash that could have harmed the marine animals living in the area. Every fall the club holds this beach clean up and it is one of the events the members look forward to each year. Surprisingly, the volunteers found that this year there was much less garbage for them to pick up compared to last year. For these teens eager to give back to their environment, it is good to know that they can make a difference. H.O.P.E. invites all Garden City High School students interesting in participating in events like this to join them in room 142 after school on Mondays.
