GC Thunder 8's Battle In Bellmore

This past Sunday, the Garden City Thunder 8's continued their road swing thru Newbridge Park in Bellmore. Another beautiful day of fall weather and competitive football awaited them.
The Thunder boys knew it was going to be a tough test of their character and ability. This was Bellmore's home opener, and they were pumped to deliver a home victory in this young season. The Thunder started quickly, gaining a couple of early first downs as they marched towards the Bellmore goal line. The offensive line of John McDonald, John Campo, John Griffith, Patrick Kavan, Ryan Walsh, Sean Rode, and Michael McCauley drove back the big front seven of its Bellmore counterparts. Unfortunately, as was the theme the majority of the day, an untimely fumble dashed any opportunity to get in the end zone.
The Bellmore team capitalized on the early turnover for a 7-0 lead. After another costly fumble by the Thunder boys, the defense stepped up to maintain the one touchdown deficit going into halftime. The second half became a defensive battle, with the Thunder boys giving it their all, but turning the ball over again at a key point in a drive. The loss of two key running backs was evident and taking its toll.

Finally, the Thunder focused on holding onto the ball and went on a time consuming march down the field. Taking what the defense gave them, the boys were determined to even the score and get that critical tying touchdown. The determination was etched on their face and with great resolve they culminated the drive with a touchdown from Aidan Byrnes. With just about 2 minutes to play in the contest, the critical extra point was needed to tie this hard fought contest. Again, the boys rose to the occasion and delivered to make it 7-7.
The defense, which had been on the field way too long on this day due to Thunder "fumble-itis", was then asked to hold off Bellmore one more time. The Bellmore quarterback executed a devastating long run to put Bellmore in the end zone for the go ahead touchdown. With little time left in the game, the Thunder were unable to go the length of the field and could not deter an unfriendly clock. Great effort by the boys. They deserved a better fate.
