Garden City Awarded Scholar/Athlete School of Distinction

2008-09-26 / School

For the fourth time since the 2003-2004 school year, Garden City has been awarded the prestigious title of Scholar/Athlete School of Distinction from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. This honor is bestowed on schools whose entire roster of varsity athletic teams qualified in the NYSPHSAA Scholar/Athlete Team Award Program, with each player earning a 90% academic GPA or better.

Garden City was one of only three Nassau County districts to receive this honor for its scholastic and athletic achievements, but of the three - Garden City with 32 teams, Massapequa with 28 teams, and Jericho with 29 teams - Garden City had the most teams. "With 32 teams that include several hundred students maintaining an average of 90 or above over the course of the school year's three seasons," commented Garden City Athletic Director Nancy Kalafus, "this award represents a truly impressive accomplishment by our Scholar/Athletes."

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Feirsen and Athletic Director Nancy Kalafus (center, holding awards) accepted the plaque and trophy on behalf of the district from Patrick Pizzarelli (left), 1st Vice President of the NYSPHSAA and Todd Nelson (right), NYSPHSAA Assistant Director at the September meeting of the Section VIII Athletic Council.

Congratulations to all of Garden City's varsity 2007-2008 Scholar/Athletes, their coaches and teachers on this outstanding achievement.
