The Garden City Fund of the United Way of Long Island has donated $1,000 to the Garden City Bird Sanctuary for use in continuing its environmental stewardship and educational programs. The United Way of Long Island's Garden City Fund is the successor to the Garden City Community Fund and works to change and improve lives in and around the Garden City community by improving access to health care, reducing hunger, supporting children and youth and assisting our neighbors in need. The nonprofit Garden City Bird Sanctuary works with many youth on community service, ecological and educational programs at the 9 acre community nature preserve, and is currently assisting in the creation of another community park\bird sanctuary at a 20 acre storm water basin in East Meadow. "We are grateful for funding from the United Way of Long Island as it is a much needed resource for the GC Bird Sanctuary. Sump-thing continues to happen!," remarked Rob Alvey, founder of the award winning innovative bird sanctuary program in 1995. "The Garden City Bird Sanctuary has about 250 family members, and has had over 1,000 visitors this year alone. We need increased financial backing so that our community service volunteers have the tools and resources to work effectively." Over 20 organizations received funding in 2008 including the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
