Clean Elections To Be Discussed

2008-09-26 / Community

On Monday, October 6th, at 7:30 at the Garden City Public Library 'Clean Money/Clean Elections" will be introduced by Mr. Paul Gold. Mr. Gold, a retired businessman, now co-chair of the 'Clean Election Committee' of the Long Island Progressive Coalition. As co-chair, Mr. Paul Gold is part of 'Citizen Action of New York' that coordinates with other commissions to encourage New York State reform.

AAUW's program, "Clean Money/Clean Elections" refers to fully funded public campaigns. They are working on the State level to help pass a very effective bill in this regard. Other states have been successful in passing such legislation including Arizona, Connecticut, and Maine which means they elect state legislators. Four other states use it for lesser officers. There are federal "Clean Elections" bills in the U.S. Congress also.

New York State AAUW realizes that to accomplish the goal of "Clean Money/Clean Elections" there must be a grass roots effort. Resolutions such as enhancing strict spending limits, stopping the endless money chase for elections, and reducing the escalating cost of elections will be discussed.

Mary Knox at 741-0592, who is in charge of membership for the Garden City Branch of AAUW, would welcome those persons who call and express their interest in this resolution. If you feel you might like to help towards the success for "Clean Money/Clean Election" or just want to learn more about the movement related to the resolution, please join us on December 6th.
