Thunder 7's Play First Game Against Tough Competition
A Final Pep Talk before taking the Field
The Thunder O'Connor 7's took to the field for the very first time playing an outstanding game against Inwood last Sunday. In oppressively hot July-like conditions, the boys kept it close against a tough opponent coming up on the short end of a 6-0 score.
Early on, despite a few penalty calls in GC's favor, Inwood was able to sustain a 10 minute- plus offensive drive to put the first points on the board with a touchdown. Thunder defense held tough and denied the extra point attempt. GC's first offensive drive yielded some solid yardage, but they weren't able to capitalize on the forward movement. Inwood regained control of the ball, and it was time for defense to step up. Solid tackles by a defensive team including Colin Hart, Connor Gunn, Matthew Conelli and Paul Varano held the opposition to a minimal advance. Thunder regained possession but couldn't sustain the drive downfield. As the clock ran out on Inwood's last drive of the half, the defensive team continued to shine as Sean Tariche, Riley Coughlin-Roberti, Brendan McEvoy, and Alexander Erickson denied their opponent any chance of scoring.
Offensive Line Ready for the Play
GC started the second half on offense and their backfield of Jack Muldoon, Aidan O'Connor, Justin Coppola, and Richard Petrone were determined to gain some yardage. Inwood held tough and denied any drive to the goal line. With Inwood back in possession of the ball the defense took to the field again. At third and goal, Inwood was poised to extend the lead, but the defense including Jack Cobb, Justin Coppola, Jack Ryan, and Liam Griffith roared back to shut them down. All day long the Thunder defense employed a bend but not break defense. The offensive line which included Teddy Ferzola, Matthew Marooney, Dylan McDonald, and Matthew McGovern were firing out and taking on the massive front six of the Inwood defensive line. GC took the ball and began their last drive of the day. Time was not on their side as the final gun sounded. GC Thunder O'Connor 7s came off the field with their heads held high. They went toe to toe with a traditional powerhouse and came away with enthusiasm and optimism for the remainder of the year. Congratulations to the coaches and the boys on a hard fought game and all out effort by every member of the team.
