GC Flash Open Season With Two Shutouts

The Victorious Flash
The Victorious Flash The U-11 Garden City Flash secured first place at the Covanta Tournament in a pre-season confidence booster the weekend before Labor Day. They opened their regular season against the POB Lightning, the only squad at Covanta that ever had a temporary lead over the Flash. Perhaps it was playing on a larger field that led to sheer domination by the Flash but their passing was nothing short of spectacular as Garden City shut out the Lightning by a score of 4-0 on goals by Kerry Defliese (who scored the first and third), Nicole Derby (who is as dangerous to the opposition as a striker as she is as a netkeeper) and Isabel Klatt (who always manages to always be in the right place at the right time). Both Nicole Leto and Nicole Derby were simply awesome in goal denying each and every scoring attempt by the Lightning.

Once again, Catherine Galzerano, Grace Cameron, Emily O'Neil, Kelly Aneser, Katie Muldoon and Michaela Bruno gave a 110% effort and pure hustle as they pressured the POB defense. Chloe Stapleford displayed her powerful shot and tenacity as did Leto and Derby when they were on the field. In the net, both Nicoles were simply awesome in goal denying each and every scoring attempt by the Lightning. Tianna Biscone showed here adaptability making the switch from striker to sweeper. As the last line of defense, Biscone and Stapleford took pressure off of their netkeepers as they frustrated their opponents offense.

Last weekend, the Flash faced an incredibly talented squad from Levittown. Coaches Galzerano, Cameron and Derby were as proud as the parents on the sideline as the girls from Garden City proceeded to put on a first half passing clinic! They demonstrated patience, precise timing and wholly unselfish efforts as they controlled the ball and tempo of the game the entire first half. Michaela Bruno scored first on a well timed feed from Katie Muldoon followed by Isabele Klatt as assisted by Kerry Defliese and Kelly Aneser on a pass from Grace Cameron that was redirected by Catherine Galzerano.

The Flash held onto their 3-0 first half lead after a scoreless second half battle in which the netkeeping and defense were rock solid if not flawless. Biscone and O'Neil displayed both finesse and physical prowess while Stapleford and Galzerano showed us their power and speed. Netkeepers Leto and Derby were simply poised and perfect!

This is a well conditioned team that seems to have the right mix of players and the right attitude. They are off to an impressive start with a 2-0 record and no goals against. Go Flash!
