School Board Begins Year With Accolades

      The first Garden City Board of Education meeting of the school year began on an upbeat note, as students and the Garden City Middle School were recognized for special achievements. Five students who won medals in the 2008 Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged were congratulated: Matthew Castellano, Michael Lynch, Philip Mamos, Grayce Nix and Colin Ripp.

Metrics Pay Off For Middle School Student
      Thanks to the keen eye and metric skills of Thomas Reina, currently a seventh-grader at Garden City Middle School, Zero Odor, LLC has changed its packaging. As part of a mathematics exercise last spring, Thomas informed the company in writing of a metric error he spotted on Zero Odor packaging. The company subsequently corrected the product label based on the information Thomas provided.

Donation To Ronald McDonald House
      David Glicker from Garden City and Ann Torcivia of Levittown donated a $500 check and a Gibson Stratocaster electric guitar with amplifier to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. House President Robert S. Weitzner is photographed presenting a check with Program Manager Michael Pfeiffer, Mr. Glicker and Mrs. Torcivia.

S.A.T. Review Course
      If test scores on the new SAT tests are important to you or someone you know, then now is the time to sign up for the review course being sponsored by Continuing Education. The review course starts on Tuesday, 9/23 at the High School. The class time is from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. Please sign up in advance.

      Everyone at Garden City Middle School is smiling at bit wider and brighter these days as students, faculty, staff and administration share pride of ownership in being honored by United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spelling as one of the 320 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence recently selected from across the nation.

      It's been forty five years since the Class of '64 graduated from Garden City High School. It was a wonderful class, the tip of the Baby Boomer generation, with so much character, talent and promise. Over the years, as if so often the case, we've lost touch with many of our friends and often wondered how they fared in chasing their hopes and dreams.

Stewart School Second-Graders Get Acquainted
      The second-graders in Stella Guiry's class at Garden City's Stewart School got to know one another this September by bringing in a ME BAG. Inside the bag were many treasures that helped the class and teacher learn more about the interests and hobbies of their new friends. Some children shared a favorite stuffed animal, a vacation souvenir or a piece from a special collection.

Adelphi Student Program At Garden City Bird Sactuary
      Ad elphi's Freshmen Community Action Coalition group, under the direction of Dean Hudson -Tomlin spent a day working at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary as part of their week-long program. Over 40 students participated in the Adelphi University program to introduce freshmen students to Adelphi, the local area, and the community services that depend on volunteers.

Waldorf Kicks Off 62nd Year
      The Waldorf School of Garden City opened its doors on Wednesday, September 3, 2008, to over 350 nursery through 12th grade students. Continuing a Waldorf tradition, the school year began with a beautiful opening assembly where new first graders were welcomed to the lower school with the gift of a rose from a member of the senior class.
