As Summer Ends, A New Season Begins
The Garden City Recreation Department is winding down from a wonderful summer season. Our pool opened its 52nd season to beautiful, warm weather which continued throughout our summer months. Our pool members were treated to many special events including movie nights, senior days, and family concerts. Labor Day brought an end to the season, with a special celebration ending a night of fireworks viewed from the hill.
Our neighborhood playgrounds offered many activities for the school aged set. Arts and crafts were offered any day, games were organized, and trips were taken. The park attendants did their best to keep this age group busy and interested. The department also offered a series of camps and clinics for this age group, including two new ones that were well received - a theatre camp and a team handball camp. Although our camps teach basic fundamentals of the sports or activities they represent, we find many children enjoy returning to participate every year.
The Gazebo concerts series this year was the hit of the summer. Tributes to the Beatles and the Duprees as well as jazz, big band sounds, doowop were listened to by hundreds of people this summer. Our free concerts are a standout in this community and are loved by all that attend.
And so the summer fades, only to bring the fall season, with the beginning of our tennis program and new paddle tennis courts at Community Park, our dance program for children at Cluett Hall, and St. Paul's Senior Center opening to their 3rd season. Please watch for the grand opening of the new Community Park Tennis building this fall and enjoy a round of mini golf before the season ends. The Recreation Department looks forward to offering new programs as the fall season continues........it looks like it is shaping up to be one busy fall!
