The U12 GC Xtreme hosted the Bay Shore Power at St Pauls this past Saturday. Although the match was played under threatening skies and the thick humidity of "Hanna," the team was pumped up for its season opener. Throughout the summer, the Xtreme have worked diligently to prepare for the fall season. Their hard work was evident as the team moved the ball brilliantly into the Power defensive area for 60 minutes. Unfortunately, they were repeatedly denied by the incredible play of the Bay Shore keeper and wound up losing the match 2-0.
With spirit and high energy as the match started, the Xtreme were quickly into the Power defensive third. Forwards Joanna Sokolovic, Lauren Miesemer and Isabel McKeown found space and played their midfielders in on goal. Kelsey Whitney, Alison Holfester, Laurel Fisher and Colette Seel were in at midfield. These players were quick to the ball and made threatening runs into the Power 18 yard box. Kristin Adams and Cara Adams were in at stopper. Kristin and Cara not only protected their penalty area, but also were always in good supporting portion to aid the Xtreme offense. Sam Miesemer, Deanna DiPierro and Jenna Codignotto made up the back line for the team. Jenna and Sam didn't allow Bay Shore to attack down the flanks and Deanna had total control of the middle. With the pressure the Xtreme had on the Power, they forced numerous corners throughout the match. Deanna in her usual form, kept dropping her corners right in the six yard box. This lead to pure havoc for the Bay Shore keeper and defenders. Shannon Tierney was in goal for her team. Shannon made some good saves and did a great job of taking charge of the defense when the Power came forward.
Colette Seel on the move. Although down 2-0 at the half, there was no quit in the Xtreme. As they did in the first half, the midfielders and stoppers just kept winning 50/50 balls, one after another. With possession, the Xtreme had the Power on their heels. Cailee McCarthy and Shannon Tierney were constantly battling the Bay Shore players to win the ball, winning a majority kept their team in the match. Laurel Fisher was in at keeper. Laurel made one great decision after another and came up with some big saves to keep the match close. It was a great effort by all 14 Xtreme players, their coaches and parents were quite proud of them. We wish Katie Roscoe and Alicia Mueller quick recovery from their injuries.
Alison Holfester about to send a cross. Over the summer, the Xtreme were awarded their fourth consecutive Sportsmanship Award from LIJSL. The team takes great pride in being presented with this award.
