Fifth grade students display their businesses!Fifth grade students display their businesses! Last semester the fourth and fifth grade Quest students at Stewart School studied number systems and so much more! In this thematic inquiry, the youngsters gathered information about the number systems of the ancient Greeks, Babylonians, Romans and Egyptians as well as the Hindu-Arabic, Binary and Quinary systems. They demonstrated knowledge of each system through a series of fun and engaging activities. Then, they designed and created a business that incorporated the number system of their choice in it. Required elements for this project included: designing a logo, slogan and business card, drawing blueprints, creating an advertising campaign and a 3-D model. The students especially enjoyed using the advertising techniques they studied to create their PowerPoint commercials. A culminating activity was held in June to showcase their business models. This thematic unit applied the New York State Learning Standards in all areas including Mathematics and Technology, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Career Development and Occupational Studies. It was an exciting and fascinating theme.
