Serial Counterfeiter Arrested
Garden City Police announce the arrest of a serial counterfeiter who received a five-figure check for a fake Patek Philippe which he sold.
Ian K. Kosloff, 31 walked into H.L. Gross & Brothers on Franklin Avenue on Aug. 6 to sell a watch he said was worth $20,000. After some negotiation, a jeweler wrote him a check for $12,500 in exchange for the stainless steel watch. Kosloff presented a store receipt from the original purchase. After Kosloff had left with the money, the store scrutinized the watch and realized that while the outside of the watch made it appear legitimate, the inside of the watch was not a Swiss-made Patek Phillippe -- but a nearly worthless Japanese imitation.
A report was made to the Garden City Police Department and Det/Sgt James Bartkowski along with Detectives Kevin Madden and Detective Robert Rothermel initiated an investigation. Upon inspecting the receipt the detective's suspicions were aroused. They enlisted the help of detectives from the Boston Police Department, where the store was listed, and was advised that no store existed at that address.
Garden City Detectives then developed other leads which lead them to a Bronx address. More information was obtained which enabled Detective Madden to establish contact with the subject. Detective Madden was able to arrange an interview with the subject who went to the Garden City Police Department. After the interview, the subject was placed under arrest.
Further investigation revealed that the subject has outstanding warrants for the same acts in Florida, South Carolina and Virginia. He was charged with 3 felony counts of Grand Larceny, Possession of a Forged instrument, and Counterfeiting. He was held in lieu of 100,000 bail.
Detectives request that anyone having contact with this subject please call them at 516-465-4109 or 1-800-244-TIPS
