Middle School Receives National Honor
The Garden City Middle School has been selected as a 2008 No Child Left Behind National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, announced Superintendent Dr. Robert Feirsen at the Sept. 9 Board of Education work session.
"It's really quite an honor," he said. "It's a very restricted category and has a very intensive application process and we're really delighted with that acknowledgment."
The award distinguishes and honors public and private schools, at all levels from K through 12, for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. Students at the middle school achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state exams, which is one of the criteria to be eligible for the award.
The middle school was one of 320 schools selected this year. Middle School Principal Dr. Peter Osroff plans to attend an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on October 20-21.
The school was nominated for the award by Richard Mills, the New York State commissioner of education.
