The Garden City U-12 Xtreme participated this past weekend in the annual East Meadow Soccer Club Tournament, sponsored by Covanta Energy. The team experienced some new challenges at this tournament. The U-12 teams are playing on much bigger fields and the format is 11 v 11. This makes the game much more tactical and interesting. The weather over the weekend was terrific, mild with plenty of sunshine.
The Xtreme were in a pairing with the Stony Brook Academy, West Islip Shooting Stars, Rockville Centre Rage and the Farmingdale Phoenix. At times all four matches contained end-to-end action, great scoring chances and superb defending. The highlight for the Xtreme was the match against the Stony Brook Academy. Completely dominating play for the first 10 minutes, the forwards and midfielders combined on numerous passes, leading to quality shots on goal. The team scored a goal in each half, the second with 19 minutes remaining to secure the victory. Aided by great defensive play, Shannon Tierney and Laurel Fisher combined for the shutout in the goal. Hopefully, the first of many.
Deanna DiPierro wins the 50/50 ball.
The team looks forward to week #1 of league play on September 6th.
Laurel Fisher clears the ball.
Sam Miesemer takes the ball wide.
Cailee McCarthy races up the field.
Shannon Tierney goes around the defender.
