What's Up For Young Adults

Annual Back to School Bash Concludes

Summer Reading Program

The annual Back to School Bash will be held on Wednesday evening, August 27th from 6-8:30 PM. The last date to submit a mini-review to become eligible for this concluding program for the YA Summer Reading Club was Saturday, August 16th. Invitations have been sent to all eligible teens, including the Teens & Tots volunteers.

As in the past, pizza, snacks, and prizes will abound for all attendees. One of the prizes this year will be a coupon for printing at the new YA Computer Center, a valuable asset for the coming school year. This year the entertainment will be a DJ who will arrive at 7PM and will conduct a Karaoke Idol evening.

TeenBoss Workshop

Presenter, Terry Parrett was unable to be at the Library on July 28th forcing a last minute cancellation of the Teen Boss Workshop. Anyone who was signed up for this program gets priority registration for the rescheduled workshop. Mr. Parrett will be at the Library on Saturday, September 20th, from 3-4:30 PM.

As originally advertised, this workshop will explore how a young person can become a junior entrepreneur with tips on how to start, promote, and determine what to charge for goods and services offered in your business. All attendees will receive a CD-ROM packed with goal- setting and planning material, sample advertising, and marketing pieces, ideas for different types of teen businesses, and more. The workshop is limited to 30 participants. Registration began Monday July 14th. Inquiries to get on the list for September are being accepted now.

Discover the YA Computer Center

Use the printing coupons won at the Back to School Bash at the new YA Computer Center which is up and running. The renovations to the Young Adult Room included a Computer Center. Reserved for those patrons in Grades 6-12, there are four computers at the west end of the YA Room as well as a laser printer and a sign up station for reserving the next available computer when all are in use. These computers are available during normal library hours unless no one is available to supervise. This will insure that the computers are used only by the appropriate age group.

Each machine is equipped with Internet Explorer (always filtered), PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. YA's who need Excel may use it in the Adult Computer Center on the Lower Level. As in the Adult Computer Center, there is a 3 hour limit for use per day, and a limit to 5 pages of free printing. Additional printing needs can be purchased at the Circulation Desk for 5 cents per page up to 20 additional pages.

Coming Attractions This Fall

In September the Young Adult department with the sponsorship of the Friends of the Garden City Public Library will be hosting a series of workshops on college admissions and funding. These workshops are open to students and their parents.

The second workshop, "How to Beat the High Cost of College", conducted by Barry Fox will be on Wednesday evening, September 24th from 7-8:30 PM with time for questions and answers at the end. The third and final college workshop, "SAT Workshop for Parents and YAs", conducted by Steve Rosner of Kaplan will be held on Wednesday evening, October 1st beginning at 7:30 PM.
