2008-08-22 / Community

Serious illness can bring anxiety and depression. But there are methods you can learn to help you feel better. In a discussion to be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, social workers Richard Belson, DSW, and Sandi Kafenbaum, LCSW, will provide insight on how people with breast cancer can cope.

The discussion will be held on Wednesday September 17, from 7 to 9 pm at Adelphi University's Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, New York.

Dr. Richard Belson teaches couple and family therapy at Adelphi University School of Social Work, where he has worked for 30 years. In 2004 he won a special prize as the best teacher in the University. Amongst his writings are: Retrospectives of a Strategic Therapist Who Likes Shredded Wheat; Ten Tried and True Methods to Achieve Burnout; and How to be a Successful Failure as a College Professor. Dr. Belson is in private practice in Long Island and Manhattan.

Sandi Kafenbaum has been the counseling group coordinator at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program for over 15 years. She develops and facilitates groups for women, men, couples and family members, consults with health care professionals in setting up group programs, and works extensively with social work interns.
