"Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities"
The Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs will present a workshop entitled "NORCs: Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities." This program, one in the Department's series of Gerontology Workshops 2008, will be held on Tuesday, September 23 from 9:00 to 11:30 am at the Smeal Learning Center, 201 I.U. Willets Road, Albertson. Older persons, their caregivers, professionals in the aging network, and members of the community at large are invited to attend this workshop which will be offered free-of-charge. Registration is required in advance. Nassau County has three areas that have been designated as NORCs. Each of these locations has a high density of older persons who are living within a small geographic area, and state funding has been made available to foster a sense of community and to provide residents with special services. Jeffrey Rosenfeld, Ph.D., Director of the Gerontology Program at Hofstra University will give an historic overview of the "age in place" concept. Representatives from each of the NORCs, Project Independence in the Town of North Hempstead, Plainview/Old Bethpage Cares, and Project Place will provide examples of their activities over the past couple of years to assist older persons with supportive services. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information and to reserve a seat for this workshop, please call the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs at 227-8900. Directions and parking instructions will be forwarded upon registration.
