Students Receive Awards

Katherine Prizeman of Mineola and Katherine LaRousse of Garden City were among the 64 outstanding members of The University of Scranton's undergraduate class of 2008 recognized for their academic excellence and/or service during the university's Class Night. Students from the university's four academic divisions were honored for achievement in their fields of study.

Ms. Prizeman is the recipient of the Excellence In International Language Business Award. A graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, she earned a bachelor's degree while double majoring in international language and business, with a minor in French. She was a member of the Special Jesuit Liberal Arts, Alpha Mu Gamma, Phi Sigma Tau, Alpha Lambda Delta and Alpha Sigma Nu, for which she served as secretary. She participated in the Scranton Emerging Leaders Program and the Study Aboard Program. Ms. Prizeman was also a resident assistant, a freshman orientation assistant and a University Ministries Retreat leader. She was named a Fullbright Fellow alternate to Uruguay for 2009 for research in Latin American Philosophy. She plans to pursue a career in foreign affairs.

Ms. LaRouse is the co-recipient of the Jesuit Community Award for Outstanding Service. A graduate of Sacred Heart academy in Hempstead, she earned a bachelor's degree in counseling and human services, with a triple minor in theology, psychology and coaching. She was named to Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. Ms. LaRousse was a member of the Honors Program, Pi Gamma Mu, Psi Chi, Tau Upsilon Alpha, Thera Alpha Kappa and Alpha Sigma Nu, of which she was treasurer. She was also a member of the Counseling and Human Services' Association, a resident assistant and an orientation assistant, and participated in service trips to New Orleans, Arizona and Kentucky. She plans to volunteer with Good Shepherd Volunteers and work at Collier High School, a school for troubled teens in Wickatunk, N.J.
