Former Comptroller To Speak At Adelphi
Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Eugene Ludwig, founder and chief executive officer of Promontory Financial Group and former U.S. Comptroller of the Currency, who will deliver the annual Hagedorn Lecture on Corporate Social Responsibility on Tuesday, September 23, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City.
Mr. Ludwig will share his views on the importance of social responsibility in the twenty-first century. As head of the U.S. Treasury Department Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Mr. Ludwig supervised the nation's 3,000 federally chartered commercial banks under President Bill Clinton. During his term, Mr. Ludwig spearheaded efforts to modernize the banking sector and revitalize the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977, a law which required banks to invest in impoverished areas and improve lending to low- and moderate-income borrowers. Mr. Ludwig's leadership as comptroller led to a transformation of the banking industry.
As founder and chief executive officer of Promontory Financial Group, Mr. Ludwig currently represents more than half of the world's largest banks on six continents and eight of the world's 10 largest financial institutions, providing services in a number of areas, including retail and wholesale commercial banking, wealth management, and capital markets.
Previously, Mr. Ludwig served as vice chairman of Bankers Trust Company, the seventh largest U.S. bank holding company at the time, until helping to engineer sale of the company to Deutsche Bank. Prior to serving in the Office of the Comptroller, Mr. Ludwig was a partner at the law firm of Covington & Burling, where he practiced as a banking industry specialist. Mr. Ludwig earned his J.D. from Yale University in 1973 and master's as a Keasbey Fellow from Oxford University in 1970. He graduated magna cum laude from Haverford College in 1968.
Started in 2003 through a generous contribution from Horace '01 (Hon.) and Amy Hagedorn '05 (Hon.), Adelphi's annual lectureship series on Corporate Social Responsibility enables the University to invite prominent speakers to address pressing issues of the day. The series fits with the University's overall goal to create a culture of conscience among students, faculty, staff, administrators, and local community members. Previous speakers include David Boies, Thomas J. Donohue M.B.A. '65, Noreen Harrington '81, Peter G. Peterson, Josh S. Weston, and Arthur Levitt.
