A Trip Down Memory Lane
From left: Joe Leto, president of the Garden City Retired Men's Club, Jack Griffith, Jack's son Jack Griffith Jr. and George Salem, club program director. On Monday June 23rd, Jack Griffith, a lifetime member of the Baseball Writers of America, entertained 60 members of the Garden City Retired Men's Club with interesting tales of some of the all-time greats of the baseball world.
In the early days, many men had a favorite pastime called "The Hot Stove League," where they would gather around a fat pot belly stove, warm their hands and spin a yarn or two about a favorite baseball player or team. Club members were reminded of the league as they listened to Griffith as he reached into his memory bank and came up with stories of the early days of baseball and the personalities of some of the giants of the sport.
He went from Babe Ruth to Jackie Robinson, revealing little incidents and idiosyncrasies peculiar to each individual. He dwelled on Casey Stengal, who was a character unto himself.
