Winthrop Continues To Lead The Way
     Winthrop-University Hospital has long been known for its outstanding outcomes in interventional cardiology and its capacity to handle even the most challenging cases. In recent weeks the Hospital expanded its armamentarium of treatment options for people with Coronary Artery Disease with the addition of the Impella heart pump and the latest drug-eluting stent, known as Xience.

News From The Children's Room
      Our summer reading programs "Catch the Reading Bug" and "The Caterpillar Club" ended on August 6th. Children who completed 3 or 4 activities and won at least one prize were invited to the Final shows! The Caterpillar Club's show, "Mr. S and His Hip Rockin' Music" was held on Tuesday, August 5th.

     The Garden City Public Library hosted eight book discussions for children this summer as part of the "Catch the Reading Bug" Summer Reading Program. Two book discussions per grade were held for children entering grades two, three, four and five.

Seniors Play Friday Morning Games
     Senior Citizens are invited to get together with other seniors at the Garden City Library to play their favorite board games. The summer game mornings began on Friday, August 1st and will continue on Fridays, August 8, 15, 22, 29 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

      The fall Luncheon and Bridge Party will be upon us soon. The party is sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary - Post 265 of the American Legion - Garden City. There will be a full Buffet of chicken, ham and vegetables delights. A special dessert in addition to wine, beer and soda will round out the luncheon party. The price is only $20.00 per person.

      Time and summer march on and soon we will have the Dog Days of August upon us. We all talk (and complain) abut the weather but there is little we can do about it. This past week has not been a good one for the Garden City Pool, but there was a fair number of swimmers who slipped into the water between showers. Better luck this coming week.

Children Enjoy Chocolate Covered Worms And Waffles
      The Garden City Library hosted the last of five summer arts and crafts programs on Tuesday, July 29th. In the morning, children ages 2 1/2 to 5 enjoyed making chocolate covered worm cookies with Lisa Basini, "The Bakery Coach". Children in Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 made waffles and ice cream with "The Bakery Coach" in the afternoon.

Another Successful Luncheon For UCP
      On June 10, 2008 Garden City based Tri-Town Auxiliary of UCPN held its annual June Luncheon. This was another very successful event that will provide funds for the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau which is an independent, non-profit health agency serving over 1,800 children and adults with cerebral palsy, developmental and other disabilities.

Garden City Casino Lobsterfest 2008
      The Garden City Casino held its Annual Lobsterfest recently to the delight of 150 members and guests. With the sun setting to the West cocktails and hors d'oeuvre were served on the patio with music by the Casino's own Brian McGeough. A lobster dinner with corn and baked potatoes followed by dancing to the PianoMan, Pat Farrell.

Troop 243 Goes To Washington, D.C.
      Troop 243 visited Washington, D.C. in November of 2007, walking many miles and visiting great places of national and historical significance. The first stop was the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing where the Scouts took a great tour of the place where "the money is made". They saw more cash in that one tour than they will probably see for the rest of their life.
