Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) has announced the New York State Department of Civil Service will offer a new Correction Officer examination on October 18, 2008. Applications must be postmarked no later than September 2, 2008. Candidates must be 21 years of age on or before the date of their appointment.

"There is a growing need for Correction Officers throughout the state," said Senator Hannon. "Anyone interested in a career with the Department of Correctional Services should make application for the upcoming exam."

Correction Officers are responsible for the custody and security, as well as the safety and well-being of criminal offenders in State Correctional Facilities and Correctional Camps. The position requires candidates to complete a 12-month training program before advancing to Correction Officer. Those who successfully complete the training and probation period are eligible to earn up to sixteen college credits towards a post-secondary degree. Currently, starting compensation for a New York State Correction Officer is $34,329 and increases to $41,348 after one year. Annual salary advancements are performance based.
