What a joy it is to see the restored Cathedral spire unfurled and visible in all its glory. Cornelius Stewart would be happy and proud of all those who made it possible - no matter how long it took. I think that we are all delighted to have the spire restored as it is one of Garden City's most famous landmarks and a great tribute to our history. The Cathedral was Cornelia's gift to her church and to her Village along with The Cathedral School of St. Mary's (now gone) and The Cathedral School of St. Paul's which will hopefully be saved as both schools were a strong part of our history. Landmarks can and should be restored and kept as they tell who we were and who we are now. Thankfully, landmarks are being restored and used in towns and cities all over the United States and they tell us who they were and who they are now.
The rains finally let up and folks in town headed for the Garden City Pool. Enjoying the weathers and the ambiance recently were Carol Countryman, Jackie West, June Kwee, Martha Widner and Ann Heinzelmann , who brought her visiting daughter to enjoy also. It was wonderful and the ladies enjoyed the 11 a.m. exercise class too. Joe Urban enjoys it on week-ends as he relaxes from his week of commuting to the big city. Note to Margaret and her daughter Mary - you were missed and we got there early, too.
It's never too soon to plan ahead - that's the way our ladies get things done. The Reader's Circle of the Garden City Community Church will meet on September 9th at noon and the book will be "The Secret Between Us" by Barbara Pelinsky. There is a heads up for those readers. Lunch will be provided by hostesses Friada Stark and Lillian LaPlac . The Garden City Pool is a nice cool place to get some reading done and many can be seen reading there. They even have a lending library by the entrance.
The Auxiliary Board of the Garden City Community Church is to be complimented as they learned that their membership Tea date conflicted with another organization's contracted date, they changed theirs. That is good cooperation and will benefit both events as so many ladies belong to both groups involved and don't want to miss either. That's the kind of cooperation that keeps all things moving in this town and moving smoothly.
Happy birthday wishes go to O phelia Paterakis , who will be celebrating her special day on the 23rd of this month, to Mary Balboni , who will do the same on the 19th, and to Agnes DiChiara who will do her candle blowing out on the 24th. May all the ladies have a wonderful day and a great year in which to enjoy much health and happiness with many more years to come.
We would not want to leave out the gentlemen so Happy Birthday wishes go to Dan D'Addario, who will be celebrating his
B-Day on the 25th of July. All good health and happiness to you also and many moe to come.
Garden City lost two more wonderful ladies this past week with the news of their passing in last Friday's paper. They were Mary Kelly and Helen Nagle . Both ladies had been active in this town, in their churches and in clubs and volunteer work in the village. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families in their time of sorrow. They will be missed by all who knew them.
Fashion always seemed to indicate what to wear in the clothing line or what was new in house furnishing so that you were always on the cutting edge. Well it extends further than that. If you live on the North Shore of Long Island, you must have designer vegetables, Tomatoes that aren't red, peppers that aren't green, chard in orange or yellow, lettuce that matches your dishes, and eggplants that aren't aubergine. And all this information comes from a well known Garden Club on the North Shore. Who should know better than they!
Note to JOAN Affierbach - Sorry that you got your name changed to Jean last week and you do such good work too. Those gremlins will play their tricks with the keys.
Take time to relax this week - go to the pool and enjoy the wonderful water and the breezes. See you at the pool!
