Adelphi Breast Cancer Program Receives Grant
State Senator Kemp Hannon (seated, center) recently met with Adelphi Breast Cancer Program staff, volunteers and Dr. Robert Scott, president of Adelphi University, to discuss help for breast cancer patients. New York State Senator Kemp Hannon has secured a $27,000 legislative grant for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program in support of its Sisters United in Health/Hermanas Unidas en la Salud project.
Sisters United in Health, established in 2002, is a special program for Long Island Latina, African American and other minority women. It is a collaborative effort of 16 local health organizations and community based programs to provide breast cancer information and services to these populations. The program offers educational workshops in Spanish and in English about the importance of being proactive about breast health through breast self-exams, clinical breast exams and getting regular mammograms. Services include outreach to community organizations, agencies, schools and churches; referrals to health services and support networks; and participation in health fairs and programs.
Says Senator Hannon: "The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline has been providing valuable services and counseling to women for decades. As Health Committee Chair, I am committed to helping the fine people who run the Hotline assist as many women as possible. Enabling women with breast cancer to have someone to speak with who has been in a similar situation is vitally important. It helps them determine the best course of treatment and provides them with the emotional support they need."
