GCHS Graduate Performs Comedy
Matthew Bryan
Matthew Bryan, a Garden City High School Class of 1997 graduate, will be performing stand-up comedy in the Joker's Wild Show at Broadway Comedy Club on Friday, July 18th at 7:30 pm.
Mr. Bryan has been performing amateur stand-up comedy for just under 6 months. Since completing a stand-up course at the American Comedy Institute with Steve Rosenfield, Mr. Bryan has appeared in amateur shows at top comedy clubs throughout New York City including: Broadway Comedy Club, Comix, New York Comedy Club, and Gotham Comedy Club.
"I tried stand-up for fun a few months back with my cousin, and I have just gotten really into it since then," Mr. Bryan comments. When asked what category he believes his material falls into he responds: "I pretty much just make fun of myself. To me, if you don't have a sense of humor about yourself, you don't have a sense of humor. Also, I think people are most interested in seeing something personal on stage, and that's what I try to show." When asked what his future plans are with his budding comedy career he explains: "I'm not really sure where this will all lead to. Right now, I just consider it a fun & exciting hobby -- and if something larger were to happen, well, that would be great!"
Aside from his amateur comedy career, Mr. Bryan co-wrote, co-produced, and co-directed the comedy short Gutter Balls with John Nugent (GCHS '96) which was accepted at 3 national film festivals in 2003. He has also written, produced, and directed the comedy short Stage Fright which is currently viewable on YouTube.
Mr. Bryan graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA with a BA in English. He also earned an MBA at Fordham's Graduate School of Business. He currently works as a marketing manager within the financial industry. He is married and lives with his wife, Melissa, in Hoboken, New Jersey. He tries to perform live a few times a month.
