William A. Von Glahn

William A. Von Glahn of Greenport, died at Eastern Long Island Hospital there on June 25, 2008, He was 87 years old.

Mr. Von Glahn was born in Ridgewood, Queens on July 5, 1920 to George J. and Lydia E. Von Glahn. He attended Pratt Institute, NYU-School of Engineering and NYU-Business School. For more than thirty-nine years, he enjoyed a career with Bell Systems (Bell Labs, AT&T and NY Telephone) as an engineer.

On October 18, 1942, he married the former Lorraine A. Smith in Ridgewood. For many years, they resided in Stewart Manor before relocating to East Stroudsburg, PA and Greenport three years ago and became a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

From June of 1943 until December of 1945, he served in the Army Air Corp and participated in the European Theatre of Operations-England & France. He continued to serve in the Reserves until 1957 when he was honorably discharged as a captain.

While a resident of Stewart Manor, he served as Mayor from 1969 until 1977. He was a volunteer with the Stewart Manor Fire Department, a member of the Free & Accepted Masons and St. James Lutheran Church and was active with the Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts. Bill, himself, was an Eagle Scout when he was sixteen.

He was a retired member of the NYS Professional Engineers, a life member of Nassau County Village Officers Association and the Telephone Pioneers of America.

In his spare time, he enjoyed "do-it-yourself" projects, house remodeling, woodworking and plumbing and electrical repairs.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-five years, Lorraine Von Glahn; three daughters, Carol Grace Dinda of New Suffolk, Denise Ruth Von Glahn of Tallahassee, Florida and Janet Ellen Craig of Setauket; one sister, Ruth L. McCloy of Englewood, Florida; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Services are being finalized and will be announced.
