GC Resident Becomes New Director Of Social Studies

Dr. Mark S. Malaszczyk, a resident of Garden City, has become the new K-12 Curriculum Coordinator for Social Studies in the Babylon Union Free School District. Dr. Malaszczyk has taught Social Studies in Babylon High School for the past fifteen years. During that time he has designed two college courses in affiliation with Saint John's University, an Advanced Placement Psychology Program, and a Seminar in Academic Research for accelerated seniors. He is currently a Ford Foundation Fellow at SUNY Stony Brook, developing a curriculum for the teaching of 'News Literacy', grades 7-12. He has also served on numerous academic committees, moderated several clubs, and coached both Cross Country and Varsity Track.

When he is not teaching in Babylon, Dr. Malaszczyk can be found at Nassau Community College, where is he is an Adjunct Associate Professor of History and Political Science. He has contributed to several textbooks, has an on-line column at ReNewAmerica.US, and is the webmaster of the blog 'Vox Vocis Publicus'. Dr. Malaszczyk has been a perpetual member of "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" since 1994, and has been recognized on two separate occasions by the Oxford University Roundtable in London, England for excellence in the teaching of history and international relations.

Asked about his tenure in Babylon, Dr. Malaszczyk stated that "it has been a privilege to serve the Babylon community these past fifteen years. Babylon is a small, intimate village that in many ways has become a second home for me." As for his recent promotion, he added that he is "so proud of the Social Studies Department in Babylon" and "honored to work with them in continuing the tradition of academic excellence in the Babylon Schools."

In Garden City you will find Dr. Malaszczyk on the sports fields of the GCAA programs and serving as an Extraordinary Minister at Saint Joseph's Church. He is happily married to wife Lisa, a graduate of the Garden City Schools ['85] and a FLES Spanish teacher at Stratford Elementary School. They have three wonderful children, Joanna, Elizabeth, and Michael. All are very active in our school and extracurricular programs.
