With Athena

Summer came this past week with all of her three H's (Hazy, Hot, and Humid) in place. The folks at the pool loved it and it is now open full time starting at 10 a.m. All reports have it that the water is warm so even I will be checking it out. In my generation, we were taught you did not go in the water until the 4 th of July, but they were dealing with the ocean water and Old Sol has been doing its best to get ours warm and he has succeeded.

It's been a busy week and the happy smile on the face of Barbara Seale was due to the impending wedding of her granddaughter who will take her vows in a historic church in Setauket with her grandma front and center. What a nice way to start the summer.

Maureen Fraser went on a tour that took her to many places, Venice included, with some of her college chums. She got back in time to join her husband Duncan and other friends at a wonderful Chef's special dinner at the Garden City Country Club. They know whereof they speak as one of their sons is a chef out at Shelter Island.

Just a few days later and at the same Country Club, there was a Seafood Patio Dinner planned with music and dancing to boot. Mother Nature sent down showers, but the Manager made the proper decision and everything was brought inside. The food was great and the dance floor was filled with happy members and guests. Enjoying the evening were: Elizabeth and Charles Dunleavy, Tony and Pat Sacco, Doris and Werner Forster, Florence and Harry Keefe, Irene and John Christie and many more.

Norma Takach has been under the weather for the past few weeks but some get well wishes would surely raise her spirits. We are all hoping to see her at the pool soon.

Jane O'Keeffe's garden was the place to be recently for the annual "In The Pink" Cocktail Party to help fight cancer. They had a Chinese Auction with prizes galore and all the profits went to The Avon Foundation - a leader in helping find a cure for breast cancer. Lori Hayslip of The Silver Connection had a wonderful selection of her beautiful jewelry and the variety of shades of pink was astounding. Some of the Cocktails were also pink and Jane was a wonderful hostess. Good for you, lady.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Arlyn and George Rath who will be celebrating theirs just about now and also to Lorraine and Frank Tauches, who will celebrate theirs on the 10 th of July. May both of the happy couples have a wonderful day and a year filled with health and happiness and many more years of wedded bliss to come.

Rose Forgione and Sarah Iannacone served as hostesses for the recent birthday party to honor all Past Presidents of the American Legion Auxiliary and they also inducted new members at the party. Their plans are in the works for their opening September 28 th Luncheon/Bridge to be held at the G.C. Senior Center. It would be a good idea to mark you calendar now as this event fills up fast. They do run a wonderful party.

We had some very sad news just as this was being put together and that was the passing of Dorothy Candiotti. Dorothy had been a long time resident of Garden City, bringing up her two sons here in town. She was very active in the G.C.P.T.A. while they were in school and following that she was active in The Helen Keller Services For The Blind. She and her late husband Charles were members of the Garden City Country Club and they especially enjoyed the Bowling League of the club. They were both wonderful bowlers. Dorothy was a long time member of The Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead and also of the Garden City Homemakers. She was always ready to lend a helping hand and our prayers and thoughts go to her family at this time. Dorothy will be missed by all who knew her.

I hope that all of you have a happy and SAFE Fourth of July and a truly wonderful start of summer. The Recreation Dept. has a lot of fun things for the whole family on that day and you will not use a lot of gas getting there, either.

Now for your thought for the week - When cheese gets its picture taken, what does it say? See you at the pool.
