SUMMER YAK AND SNACK
On Monday June 9th registration and book pick-up for the first summer young adult book discussion, Yak & Snack, began. The YA Summer Reading Club theme is "Metamorphosis". In line with that theme, the title chosen for this meeting is Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. To be as inclusive of all young adults as possible, any format of the book is acceptable for participation in the book discussion, the classic itself, the junior classics illustrated, graphic novel, or audio. The meeting will take place on the Wednesday, July 9 at 7 PM.
SCRAPBOOK WORKSHOP
Registration began on Monday, June 16, 2008 for a workshop to be taught by Christine Rissanen on the techniques of scrapbooking. Each participant will leave the workshop with two completed scrapbook pages. All are invited to bring a "memory" to incorporate into their pages. All of the other materials will be provided. The program is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2 at 7 PM. This is a one hour program which is limited to 20 participants.
PICTIONARY TOURNAMENT
YA SCAVENGER HUNT
Registration began on Monday, June 23 for a Pictionary Tournament. Last winter the Young Adult Department held a Pictionary Night and this tournament is in response to requests made following that popular program. "Charades on Paper" is the quick description of the game of Pictionary. It is a lively, fun game. To make sure there are enough copies of the game and sufficient refreshments and prizes, registration is necessary. The tournament will begin at 6:30 on Monday, July 7th and a scavenger hunt will take place that same evening.
FRUIT SMOOTHIES WORKSHOP
Registration will begin on Monday, June 30th for the Fruit Smoothies Workshop to be held on Monday, July 14th at 7 PM. Five stations will be set up for participants to make five different smoothies. Each student will rotate from station to station to make and taste the smoothies. Recipes will be given out at the conclusion of the evening. There is a limit of 20 persons in this 90 minute program.
'TWEENS & TEENS MOVIE NIGHT
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE
Thursday evening, July 17 the Young Adult Department will be showing the movie, THE SIMPSONS MOVIE at 7 PM. All guests entering grades 6-12 are invited to view this movie on the big screen of the library's large meeting room with their friends. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs for 87 minutes. The Library will be serving refreshments courtesy of the Friends of The Garden City Public Library.
DISCOVER THE YA COMPUTER CENTER
The YA Computer Center is in operation. The renovations to the Young Adult Room included a Computer Center reserved for those patrons in Grades 6-12. There are four computers at the west end of the YA Room as well as a laser printer and a sign up station for reserving the next available computer when all are in use. These computers are available during normal library hours unless no one is available to supervise. This will insure that the computers are used only by the appropriate age group.
Each machine is equipped with Internet Explorer (always filtered), PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. YA's who need Excel may use it in the Adult Computer Center on the Lower Level. As in the Adult Computer Center, there is a 3 hour limit for use per day, and a limit to 5 pages of free printing. Additional printing needs can be purchased at the Circulation Desk for 5 cents per page up to 20 additional pages.
We invite YA's to use our new Computer Center and ask that they register at the front desk. Anyone under 17 years of age should have a parent sign a consent to use form.
Registration for all YA programs may be done in person at the Young Adult desk, by phone to the Young Adult Librarian (516-742-8405) or by email to mkelly@gardencitypl.org.
