With Athena
With Athena The Presidents Coffee, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, was held recently and it was discovered that two organizations had made plans for the same date in September. One of the groups had already placed large deposits down with a restaurant and with the entertainment while the other group has not advanced that far. This is what the Presidents Coffee is all about. We're sure that the two groups will be able to work out a solution as both groups tend to lose in a situation like this. We wish you both the best and are sure that all will be well in the long run. This is why it is so important to send a representative to the Presidents Coffee so this can be headed off early in the game.

Dorothy Holl , now resident at Peconic Landing in Greenport, still keeps up with the news from Garden City through this paper. She read that Virginia Fortney is in town and she is inviting her to visit both her and Barbara Wilson some time this summer. Dorothy also reports that they have several tables of folks, formerly from Garden City playing bridge regularly at Peconic Landing. So - a big hello to all of you former Garden City folks - we miss you, too.

Speaking of bridge, the Women's Club of the Garden City County Club held its monthly Luncheon/Bridge this past week. They had 26 tables in play following the delicious buffet lunch. It keeps getting better and better. The first Small Slam of the day was made in 6 Hearts by Joy Losgar and Dorothy Schlagater . The monthly Door Prize was won by Carol Langan . Once again, there was no Grand Slam made, but better luck next month. Bridge Chairlady Muriel Urban announced that the next bridge would be held on Thursday, July 17 th. Do be sure to make your reservations.

The Retired Men's Club held a cookout this past week to honor their Birthday Boys - those 85, 90, or 95. Happy birthday to all of you and you all look so young. One member was not present and that was Peter Abitabile . Peter passed away this past week and he will be missed by all who knew him. He was a gentle man, helpful, and kind. His game at the Club was pool and he was a very good player, always ready to help out a beginner. Our prayers and thoughts go to his wife Louise and to his family in their time of sorrow.

Happy birthday wishes go to Dorothy Holl , who is a Fourth of July lady and to Nickie McGuire who will do her celebrating on the 8 th of July. Have a wonderful day and a happy and healthy year with many more to come.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go to Marilyn and Fred Camp , who will be celebrating their anniversary along with the whole country on the Fourth of July. Everyone will be flying flags on your special day. May you have many more years of wedded bliss and enjoy it in health and happiness.

The Long Island Choral Society is getting ready to celebrate the 80 th Anniversary of its founding by having a Summer Sing on Sunday, June 29 th at 7 p.m. at Chaminade High School in Mineola. They welcome new members and they will be singing the Mozart "Requiem." If you have always wanted to sing this but were afraid to try, this is your chance. A $10 donation is required. If you don't have a score, you can rent one for $5. The Auditorium is air-conditioned.

Marge Goldsmith and Betty Pupke have their committee in order for the Wednesday, September 17 th Friendship Luncheon for members and guests of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead. They have the time, the place, and the entertainment so you should mark you calendars and save the date. I hear the menu is fabulous. Watch for more details.

Ada Kane took her time coming back home from spending the winter in Florida, and when she arrived she was right back in the swing of things. Her ready smile lit up the room at one of the bridges that she attended recently and all her friends were very happy to have her back.

Dorothy Alford was also smiling at one of those bridges but since she had laryngitis she came prepared with a second set of cards that had pictures of the 4 suits, slam, pass etc. and she could hold up fingers plus the card of choice to bid. Her table seemed to have more fun that day with Dorothy smiling and holding up her cards. Our ladies let nothing stop them.

Now for our thought of the week. Before the invention of drawing boards, what did people go back to? See you next week.
