Happy Fathers Day 2008!!!
Happy Fathers Day 2008!!! The Garden City Centennials 2nd Grade Rovers team took to the road on Fathers Day Weekend to compete in the Plainedge Soccer Tournament. The Rovers started out the week by dealing with the extreme heat for practices on Monday and Tuesday. Coach Connolly wanted the boys to go thru their own boot camp, in anticipation of playing 5 games in two days. The boys were extremely attentive and ready to learn the basic skills of soccer, which according to coach Connolly included water fights, eating ice pops and discussing the upcoming Field Days at Stewart and Stratford Schools. It worked perfectly the boys had a friendly on Friday with their allies, The Dragons and came out with a tie, great job by both teams. Then came 3:30 on Saturday where the Rovers took on the West Hempstead team and came out victorious with a 1-0 win. Their next game came against a Merrick Blue team which the boys peppered with shots only to hit the post a number of times, but did come out victorious 1 to nil. The last game on Saturday had the boys playing the North Shore Nitro and after dealing with a long day in the heat and possible Tstorms at times(not to mention the infinite amount of Slushies) the Rovers dug in and tied 0-0. Fathers Day morning the Rovers came out and took it to the RVC team who went in tied with GC, both teams battled and eventually the game ended in a draw 0-0. The last game of the tournament saw the Rovers take an early lead 1 to 0 against a very game Plainedge team. After out shooting their opponents 14 to 1 and with 20seconds to play the Plainedge team were able to beat the Rovers team for the loan goal against them and claim a 1 to 1 tie. After carefully calculating the points the Rovers came out on top and were happy to display their enthusiasm for the game of soccer. I would like to thank all the parents for volunteering to keep the boys hydrated and fed throughout the tournament and also a great big hats off to the boys of Rover Soccer, coach Connolly couldn't be prouder.
