Xtreme Defuse Rockets

In the last match of the season, the Garden City Xtreme hosted the Farmingdale Rockets last Saturday. The Rockets are one of the top U-11 teams on Long Island. They are the co-champions of the Waldbaums Cup in the Major Division. However, the Xtreme have been playing excellent soccer and took the play to the Rockets for 60 minutes, winning the match 3-0.
If the Farmingdale team had any inclination that they were in for an easy day, the Xtreme put those dreams to rest as the match started. Katie Roscoe, Cara Adams and Colette Seel took control of the middle third of the field immediately. Winning ball after ball, the Xtreme had the Rockets under early pressure. Just six minutes into the match, Lauren Miesemer found Isable McKeown with some space at the top of the 18 yard box. Isabel took the Rockets center back on and beat her. Staring at the keeper, Isabel put the ball in the corner of the goal for the match's first goal. The first half had some classic battles for possession, Joanna Sokolovic fought endlessly with an outside stopper from Farmingdale for ball control, Joanna won more than her share. With 11 minutes remaining in the half, the Rockets conceded another corner. Our center back, Deanna DiPerro, bent a ball in from the corner that scored the teams second goal. It was a spectacular shot. One of the Xtreme's best offensive weapons is Deanna's corners.

Up 2-0 as the second half started, the Xtreme knew the next goal scored was critical. Kelsey Whitney, Shannon Tierney and Alison Holfester made sure the Rockets offensive runs were limited. This group did an outstanding job of marking, taking away any options from the Rocket's players. The Xtreme back line of Deanna, Sam Miesemer, Alicia Mueller and Jenna Codignotto were on top of their game. This back line recorded their third consecutive shut out. Whether winning a 50/50 ball or tracking down a forward, these players kept denying the Rockets any scoring chances. When the Rockets did get a shot on goal, our keeper Sam Derby, was unbeatable. She was always in perfect position, giving the Farmingdale shooters very little goal to shoot at. The final goal of the match was once again scored on a corner from Deanna.

The Xtreme finished the spring season very strong, winning their last three matches and moving up to 5th place in Division # 1.
