Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence in Math, Science or Technology

The Trustees of the Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund for Technology in Education ("Stephen's Fund") are pleased to announce the winners of the seventh annual Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence in Math, Science or Technology which is presented to a graduating senior from Garden City High School and to a graduating senior from a private high school who is a resident of Garden City. This year, the Trustees have honored Ms. Alexandra Galgano of Sacred Heart Academy and Ms. Kathleen Alvey and Mr. Matthew Thaler of Garden City High School. This Award includes a plaque, letter of commendation from the Trustees and a check for $1500 to each winner. The Trustees also recognized four Finalists, each of whom received $500 and a certificate. The 2008 Finalists are Megan Tigh from Sacred Heart Academy and Colin Quinn, Jenna Kirshner and Matthew LoSardo from Garden City High School. Our winners and Finalists, in fact all the applicants, are exemplary young people with high academic and life achievements, both of whom our Trustees felt exemplify Steve's wonderful qualities of love of learning and dedication to helping others especially through volunteerism and leadership.

Stephen K. Tompsett Leadership Award

In addition, this year the Trustees voted to grant two Stephen K. Tompsett Leadership Awards. While these two winners applied for the Math, Science or Technology Award, our Trustees were so impressed by them that they chose to grant the very special award for Leadership, which is not granted every year. This Award includes a check for $1000 to each winner, a letter of commendation from the Trustees and an engraved lucite plaque with the phrase "Family and Faith First" engraved on it. Steve always put family and faith first in every aspect of his short life and this is one of the qualities that made him the beloved leader that he was. The Trustees were pleased to present this Award to Mr. John Gamber of Chaminade High School and Mr. John Mortensen of Garden City High School.

Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence

This year for the first time the Trustees voted to grant an award to a student who exhibits excellence on a multidimensional level. There is no application process for this Award, with the winner chosen at the discretion of the President and Head Trustee. The Award includes $1500, letter of commendation from the Trustees and lucite plaque with a quote from Stephen: "Exceeding expectations while always striving to understand the uniqueness of every situation". The Trustees are honored to present the first Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence to Gemma Donofrio of Garden City High School.
