Mary and John Lyons.
Mary Lyons
Mary (nee McKenna) Lyons passed away from this world on January 5, 2008. Garden City lost a treasured resident on that day. She and her beloved, the late John Joseph Lyons, who passed away April 18, 1996, were blissfully married for fifty-five years. They raised their family in Garden City sine 1955. Mary and John vigorously supported their Parish, St. Joseph's Church. Mary was born October 5, 1921, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to Lucy (nee Feeney) and Hugh Charles McKenna. Her devotion to John, the love of her life, was reflected by their marriage, while he was still in danger, serving as a Combat Marine in WW-II. Her and John's lives were totally devoted to their family, supporting their children in every endeavor. Mary's friends remember her as never appearing without a smile or comforting word. She is survived by Sheila M. Lyons, Esq., of Garden City, and Eileen Lyons Eisenhauer, Mattituck. Mary is deeply missed by her family and innumerable friends, while treasured in their memories. Her wisdom, and gentle, yet strong spirit, survive her.
Lois P. Ridgway
Lois P. Ridgway, a longtime Village resident, died on May 19th after a lengthy illness.
Lois was born on July 13, 1925, the first child of Frances Marsh and J. Oswald Parisette, in Forest Hills, Queens. She was proud to have been a junior member of the West Side Tennis Club and graduated from Richmond Hill High School. Enrolled at Connecticut College in 1941, she graduated, with a major in botany, in 1945.
Lois married Ian Stuart Ridgway, of Hempstead, in 1947, and the couple settled in Manhattan where she pursued a career in cancer research at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital. They moved to Garden City in 1954, raising a family there.
In addition to tennis, Lois was passionate for gardening, the arts and liberal causes. She was a long term volunteer and past president of the Clark Garden auxiliary in Albertson. In later years she enjoyed travels to such diverse locales as Alaska, Bermuda, Kenya, London and Russia but she particularly cherished her Fourth Street home and its gardens.
Lois was predeceased by her husband, in 1989, and a brother, Frank. She is survived by her three children, Michael, Diana and Brian; his wife, Ellen, and their two children, Tracy and Colin.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lois's name may be made to Clark Garden Auxiliary, Albertson, NY, the Garden City Community Church, Garden City or the general scholarship fund of Connecticut College, New London, CT.
A private family memorial service is being planned for July 13th - her birthday.
Jeanne Puvogel
Jeanne Calame Puvogel, age 86, passed away June 16, 2008. On May 15, 2008 Jeanne and her husband, Austin celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Beloved mother of John, Joseph, Marie Derx, William, Stephen, Anne Martinez, Richard, and Janet Miller. Jeanne was a cherished grandmother of 18 grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Richard Calame, MD, Robert Calame, and her sister Mary Hebbeler. She resided in Garden City with her husband for 40 years. For over 25 years, Jeanne taught third grade at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Merrick. A 1943 graduate of St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, NY, she received her Master's degree in Education from NYU . Jeanne has been a member of Garden City Women's Club. A consummate Bridge player, Jeanne recently placed 3rd in the Garden City Women's Club closing summer tournament. Jeanne enjoyed many summers with her family in Copake Falls, NY. Mass was celebrated on June 20 at St. Anne's in Garden City. She was buried at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, NY.
