Even the threat of heavy rain forecasted for Saturday, May 31st didn't stop sports enthusiasts from attending the 14th Annual Sports Festival at Cantiague Park, hosted by the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. With sixteen softball teams vying for the championship title and six volleyball teams competing for a win, team members put forth their best and enjoyed challenging games throughout the day.
Children's Sport Connection of Garden City competed in the softball tournament and showed what they were made of on the playing field. Patricia D'Accolti, President of Children's Sport Connection, captained the team - all of whom played with heart for a great cause. To assist Children's Sport Connection, a table was set up at the park as a drop off point for attendees who wished to donate gently used sports equipment. All equipment is collected and cleaned by a professional company and then distributed to less fortunate children who have a desire to play sports.
"Every child deserves the chance to play a sport and we are happy to provide a venue to help Children's Sport Connection with their mission to help these children," said Robert S. Weitzner, President of the House. "Thank you to every team and individual who came out and supported our Sports Festival - it was a great event!"
In addition to softball and volleyball tournaments, everyone in attendance had the opportunity to listen to the tunes of Echo, a three-piece band, as well as the great sounds of WCBS FM 101.1 who played popular music during the day. Ronald McDonald wandered around the park to entertain children with his hilarious antics and inflatable bouncies were positioned strategically to attract youngsters. A barbecue lunch and sports-related raffle prizes were available for all to enjoy.
