Time and change march on, but many times we find that when we look back far enough they really haven't changed that much. When doing my Spring cleaning this year I found some things that I had saved and in looking through them before I donated them to the Historical Society's Archives I found an example that I will share with you. In the Thursday, October 16, 1969 issue of the Garden City News I found on the front page a title that caught my eye. It was OPPOSE PLAN TO CONDEMN SEVEN HOUSES. A group of Garden City property owners, members of the Central P.O.A. and other P.O.A.s in the Village, launched a campaign against the Village Board's plan to condemn private property including seven homes to provide additional parking for commercial buildings along Franklin Avenue. The plan included 100 ft. frontage of Miss Ruth Gardner's property on 6th Street. As we look back, we know that the houses were lost, but a good fight fought and life goes on.
The Historical Society's annual sale drew a delighted crowd including Nita and Woody Johnson . This Sale has something for everyone and the Historical Society benefits. If you are not a member of the Society, I would suggest that you join at any one of the membership levels and learn more about the house and its history as well as the history of this town. Call Brian Pinnola, president, and he will be happy to help you. You can also drop by the Consignment Shop at the house on 11th Street and the ladies there can also help you.
Jean Tomitz is coming along very well considering her fall while leaving the Garden City Casino following one of their bridges. Her therapy sessions are all working and we should expect to see her back in action soon. Jean is also very proud of her granddaughter, who has had several photos that she has taken published in Newsday and she is also showing her work in a gallery out East. What a wonderful and talented girl.
I know it's summer (when you read this it will be the first day), but the ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary would like you to save the date of September 28th for their opening Bridge. This one is a real winner with a hot meal included so mark your calendars and get your reservations in right away. It's at the Senior Center and space is limited.
Happy birthday wishes go to Joe Hayes, who will be celebrating his special day on the 28th of this month. May you have a wonderful day and year with many more to come.
Happy 55th Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Arlyn and George Rath who will do their celebrating on the 26th of June and we wish them many more years of wedded bliss in which to enjoy both health and happiness.
The Garden City Pool is open and it won't be long before the water will be welcoming many of you. I hear they have a great season ready for you to enjoy so come on down!
We wish a happy retirement to Alan Roeckel as he leaves his position as library director. He has served both the library and the Village residents for a long time and he will be missed by all who use our library. We have a real treasure in our library and it is used by nearly all of the residents from the very young (the story hour) and the summer program, up through all the grades and also by adults. It gets us happily through the year.
Colors go in and out of fashion and this past year we have seen brown - as in chocolate - in clothes, shoes and bags. But have you seen it in flowers? Well, you just haven't looked because it's there. We now have chocolate heleboros, dahlias, sedum, day lillies, holly hocks and even cosmos. Try putting those in with your pink and white flowers for a great look and your very own chocolate fix.
And now for your thought for the week. Since the pool is open, try this one: If swimming is so good for your figure, why are whales fat? See you next week.
