German Club Update
Miss Gottschee 2008, Melissa Osnatisch
The Garden City German Club (Garden City Deutsch Verein) attended the annual Gottscheer Volksfest on Sunday, June 1 st at Plattdeutsch Park in Franklin Square.
The Garden City German Club was founded several years ago and attends several of the Volksfests held annually at the park. It also annually attends the Steuben (German/American) Parade held in September in New York City. The club also attends the annual German American night held at Eisenhower Park during the summer.
The Garden City School District has a German program for its high school students and it also has a German instruction program as part of its Adult Education Program, offering German classes at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The Garden City German Club also participates in these classes. The Village of Garden City has a "twin" or Sister" city in Germany, the city of Coburg in Bavaria. The village has many cultural exchanges with Coburg.
Club President Joyce Albro of Garden City invites everyone to visit their table at Plattdeutsch Park this summer (German American Volksfest in July/OktoberfestOmp Pah Fest in September). The table is set up near the outdoor dance area. Look for the table with their plaque and emblem, the Edelweiss and Bavarian flag.
