Mercy Bridge Marathon Held
      The annual brunch for the Bridge Marathon, a fundraiser on behalf of the Garden City League of Mercy Medical Center, was recently held at the home of Joan Hildreth, co-chairperson of the event along with Marygene Anderson. The ladies who participated in the marathon played bridge by competing with each other during the past year.

German Club Update
      The Garden City German Club (Garden City Deutsch Verein) attended the annual Gottscheer Volksfest on Sunday, June 1 st at Plattdeutsch Park in Franklin Square. The Garden City German Club was founded several years ago and attends several of the Volksfests held annually at the park. It also annually attends the Steuben (German/American) Parade held in September in New York City.

Bank Grand Opening
      On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a cocktail reception were held at The First National Bank of Long Island to celebrate the grand opening of their Nassau County Regional Office and the conversion of their Garden City Commercial Banking Office to a Full-Service Branch.

Pack 55 Cub Scouts Picnic Features Birds Of Prey
      Pack 55 Cub Scouts ended their Scout year at their spring picnic held at Cathedral of the Incarnation. "Talons: Birds of Prey" show was featured at the picnic, with a real Hawk and two Owls that performed what birds do best: FLY! The Master Falconer was a wealth of information explaining how the birds hunt and eat and their nocturnal habits.

      Rebecca (Somerman) Wittkamper formerly of Garden City and Aron Wittkamper formerly of Tipton, Indiana, lovingly announce the birth of their first child Gabriella Kathryn Lee Wittkamper. Gabriella was born in Plymouth MA on March 4, 2008 at 10:05pm weighing 8lbs 0.5oz and measuring 19 inches long.

Auxiliary Holds "Welcome Summer" Breakfast
      On Monday morning, June 16, from 9:30 to 10:30, the Garden City Community Church Auxiliary hosted a fellowship event in the Church Parlor. About 25 women attended and enjoyed delicious home baked pastries with their coffee and tea.

Dressing For Success
      Students in Miss McCavera's second-grade class at Stratford School enjoyed dressing up for their future profession. The students put much thought into how they would look going to work in the future. They wrote about their career and how they would help people. There were many and varied jobs portrayed by the students. Other classes were also invited to enjoy this special day.

St. Anne's Mother Daughter Dance
      Every year on the first Friday of June girls from Kindergarten to eighth grade at St. Anne's are all decked out to go out dancing-with their moms! But the most special part of the evening is a 6:00 Liturgy celebrated by Father John and rejoicing in that special connection of mothers and daughters.

Increased Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage
      Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt (R, C, I - East Meadow) would like to inform his constituents that they may be eligible for increased prescription drug coverage from Medicare. The Medicare Part D low-income subsidy (LIS) can pay 75% or more of prescription drug costs for those who qualify. Many may even receive coverage for 95% of their prescription drug costs.

      The Garden City League for Helen Keller Services for the Blind held its annual meeting recently at the Orchid Restaurant in Garden City. They had over 30 members in attendance. During the event, Co-Presidents Irma Annunziato and Joy Losgar presented (HKSB) Executive John Lynch with a check for $5,000.

Community Club Features Dance Program
      On Wednesday, May 7, the Community Club closed its 2007/2008 season with a dance program featuring three of former ballerina Felicia Lovaglio's students from Adelphi University, Jennifer Cohen, Anna Smith and Irina Ostrozhnyuk, woh demonstrated dance techniques from three different disciplines - ballet, modern and jazz.

      Jeff Griggs, a Garden City native and owner of the local Personal Training Studio, is inviting the community to participate in our own first Biggest Loser competition. There will be a $20 entry fee and all proceeds will go to the Miracle Foundation. Town Health And Wellness Fair
      Today, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray joined hundreds of senior residents at Lido Beach Town Park for the Department of Senior Enrichment's annual Health and Wellness Fair. Hannon Announces Legislation On Collection Of Hospital Data
      Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City), Chair of the Senate Health Committee announced the State Senate has passed legislation he sponsored to require the Department of Health to develop and maintain official hospital comparative data for the state's hospitals. The bill, S. 4879-A, passed the Senate on June 4 and was delivered to the Assembly.

Adelphi University Receives Construction Grant
      Adelphi University has received a $2,086,000 matching grant from the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grants Program (HE Cap). The grant, made possible through the leadership of New York State Senator Kemp Hannon, will support the capital construction of the University's new Center for Recreation and Sports.

Cathedral Installs New Council Members
      On Sunday, June 8, the Very Reverend Theodore Bean installed new members of the Class of 2011 to the Cathedral of the Incarnation's Council at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. The council acts as an advisory to the Provost of the Cathedral and is in charge of stewardship for the parish. Retiring members of the council were thanked for their service to the church.
