Dr. Gary Rosenblum Addresses GC Retired Men's Club

L to r:George Salem, programs chairman; Dr Gary Rosenblum, attending physician Winthrop University Hospital; Joseph Leto, president GC Retired Men's Club
On Monday, May 19 th, Dr. Gary Rosenblum, an attending physician at Winthrop University Hospital since 1995, conducted an Osteoarthritis/Gout/Rheumatoid Arthritis basic 101 course for the Garden City Retired Men's Club. Dr. Rosenblum explained the arthritic difference between the various forms of arthritis. Osteorthritis affects the larger weight bearing joints, such as the hip, knees and lower back, while rheumatoid arthritis will affect the fingers and other small body joints. Gout, another form of arthritis, has long been called 'the rich man's disease', because of its association with rich meaty food and carbohydrates. Gout usually starts at the big toe.

Arthritis, a degenerative, inflammatory joint cartilage disease, is the number one cause of disability in the nation. It is estimated more than 40 million persons have some form of painful arthritis. There is no cure for this disease but many treatments are available to treat the symptoms of this percasive and crippling disease. The most effective treatment is proper diet, exercise and the right medication. Dr. Rosenblum, as the Director of several clinical trials, is seeking new treatments for both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Rosenblum, an instructor of medicine at SUNY Stony Brook, delivered a simple, concise and very informative presentation that was enthusiastically received by the entire assembled group. A spirited stimulating question/answer period followed.
