Playing on the magnificent fields at Harbor Links in Port Washington, the GU-11 Xtreme beat the Albertson Rockets 2-0 last Saturday morning. The Xtreme played brilliant soccer throughout the match, keeping the Rockets under constant pressure. The team broke through in the second half, netting two goals.

Linking passes one after another, the Xtreme had the ball in the Rockets defensive zone almost immediately as the match started. Early in the first half, Cara Adams and Isabel McKeown were working the right side and Lauren Miesemer and Colette Seel were on the left. Using combination passing, these players had the Rocket keeper and back line scrambling to defend. Katie Roscoe had her hands full in the middle with a large and talented Albertson center midfield. Katie and her teammates won the majority of battles for possession, aiding the Xtreme attack. Sam Derby was in the goal. Twenty-two minutes in the half, Sam was tested with a blast from a Rocket defender, but she handled it well as with all the other rocket shots on goal. Sam Miesemer, Jenna Codignotto, Alicia Mueller and Deanna DiPierro were the Xtreme defenders. When challenged, these individuals dispossessed the Rockets forwards and then connected the ball with their midfielders.

Joanna Sokolovic goes past the defender As the second half started, the Xtreme fans were anxious for their team to score. Eleven minutes into the half, it finally happened. Deanna sent a corner kick into the box. A Rocket defender cleared the ball out, but toward Deanna. She then played the ball right back in where Jonna Sokolovic one timed it into the upper right hand corner. This goal seemed to take some pressure off of the Xtreme and their play even got better for the remaining 19 minutes. In the midfield, Sam M., Kelsey Whitney and Alison Holfester kept winning balls and sending their forwards in on goal. About 5 minutes after her first goal, Joanna scored again after beating her defender one on one. Shannon Tierney was in goal and secured the shut out, getting to all un-possessed balls in her box quickly.
