County Champs Girls Varsity Track

Lauren Williams - County Champ - 4x100 relay The girl's varsity track team brought home the Class AA County Championship to Garden City for the fourth consecutive track and field season. This year's meet was run over two days at Westbury High School and featured the best runners and field event competitors in Nassau County. The County is broken down to the three classes (AAA, AA, A) that are representative of the size of schools in each. For the Spring season the girls were competing in Class AA along with rivals Hewlett, Lynbrook, Roslyn and South Side, among others. At the championship meet our girls outdistanced the competition with a total score of 150 points - 56 points better than runner up Hewlett. It was a terrific two days with great individual performances and an overall team victory to bring home the championship for coaches Charlie Cuzzo, Erica Fregosi and Tom Skrivanek. Congratulations Girls And Coaches - Job Well Done!

Outstanding performances earned the group an unprecedented 16 Class AA County Champion plaques to go along with numerous scoring medals and the overall team championship. In individual events there were two County Championships each for sophomore Emily Menges and freshman Michelle Rotondo. Emily grabbed her championship plaques with victories in the 400 (58.8) and 800 (2:17) meter races. While Michelle took home her championships by defending her 400 meter intermediate hurdles title from last year with a time of 68.3 and won the high jump with a leap of 5'00". The GC girls also dominated the relays, winning all three races. Garnering County Champion status were the winners of the 4x100m relay team of Katy Daly, Catherine Cafaro, Taryn Schmelzinger and anchor Lauren Williams with a time of 51.3, the 4x400m relay team of Jenna DeAngelo, Taryn Schmelzinger, Katy Daly and Catherine Cafaro with a time of 4:10.7, and the 4x800 team of Aoi Nishamura, Jenna DeAngelo, Brooke Senken and Maddie Adams with a time of 9:44.8.

Catherine Cafaro - County Champ - 4x100 and 4x400 In addition to these terrific efforts, the following girls bring home All County honors by scoring points in their events: Lauren Williams was 3rd in the triple jump with a personal best leap of 33'10.25" and fourth in the 400m hurdles, Emily Menges finished 2nd in the 1500 meters with an impressive time of 4:34.2, Dana Famiglietti finished 5th in the long jump, Maddie Adams was 2nd in the 2000m steeplechase and 2nd in the 3000m, Catherine Cafaro was 4th in the 200m sprint, Michelle Rotondo finished 3rd in the 2000m steeplechase, Abby Hepworth was fifth in the high jump with a jump of 4'8", Laura Martens placed 2nd in the 400m hurdles, Victoria Chimento was 5th in the 3000m, Jenna DeAngelo was 4th in the 800, Taryn Schmelzinger was 4th in the 100m sprint and 4th in the 400m while Brooke Senken took 3rd in the 800m and 5th place in the 400m.
