Annie Greiner Celebrates It was Sunday, June 1, and the Daredevils had a long time opponent, the Farmingdale Force, coming to town. Knowing the game would be a tough Division 1 contest, played with one sub on the first hot day of the spring, the girls gathered the focus to play efficient, determined, smart soccer. As expected, the game was a constant back and forth battle with our defenders continuously breaking up possible scoring opportunities for the Force. Taylor Pappas, Niki Berkery, Brynne Murphy and Lauren Coleman fought relentlessly and did an outstanding job throughout the match, never giving up. If the ball did happen to penetrate the defense, goalie Kelsey Tierney was there to shut them down. Courtney Studdert, Liesl Jaye, Jane Frumberg, Nicole Bommarito and Jenna Pasquale did their usual great job of playing through the ball and moving it up to the forwards with long accurate passes. Brynne Murphy was the first to break through and score with a booming lefty shot that was too hot for the Force's goalie to handle. After more furious back and forth play, GC's second goal came when sharp shooter Carly Knowles, surrounded near the goal by the Force, bobbed and weaved and pushed one through. The Force, always unrelenting, answered with a breakaway goal with less than a minute left in the half. The Daredevils went into the half up 2 - 1, but knew the hard part was coming. As expected, in the 2nd half, the battle ramped up right after the tap. Farmingdale put multiple direct kicks right on Garden City's net, but Kelsey turned the Force away. Starting to feel the lack of fresh legs, the Daredevils went into "hang tight" mode as the Force just kept coming. The free-for-all back and forth only ebbed when, near the end of the game, the Force had a penalty called on them. It was Erin Greiner who was given the call to step up to the opportunity. With a wall of Farmingdale girls staring her down, Erin took a shot that deflected off one of the opponents, came back at her in an instant, which she quickly one touched back with rocket intensity.... into the net to end the game with a 3 - 1 win. Coaches Paul LeSeur and Charlie Frumberg were extremely proud of the girls' efforts, smart play, and 'fire' to win.
