On May 26th, Memorial Day, in the early morning hours between 1:00 AM and 7:00 AM, Garden City Volunteer Firefighters joined area departments in supporting our local troops in their deployment to active duty. Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment have been activated once again for the middle east wars. 38 volunteer firefighters from the Garden City Fired Department, along with 800 additional volunteer firefighters from 35 area volunteer fire departments, assembled at the United States Marine base on Stewart Avenue to provide the Marines support as they deployed for duty. Garden City's Tower Ladder provided a flag arch with the New Hyde Park Fire Department inside the base as multiple waves of soldier buses departed under the arch between 3:00 AM and 7:00 AM. It was an exhilarating experience for all who attended. Dozens of fire trucks and hundreds of firefighters lined Stewart Avenue and Clinton Road to salute the buses as they passed. According to Garden City Fire Chief James Meehan, "I feel very proud of our firefighters who participated on that special day, it was a very fitting and patriotic send off for these fine men and women who protect our liberty." Chief Meehan also noted, that "it was an extra special day in that after the troop send off, more than 40 Garden City volunteer firefighters also attended the Village's Memorial Day Parade."
