Moonlight With Martins
Village of Mineola mayor Jack Martins
The Garden City Republican Club invites residents to join in a fun evening on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 beginning at 8:00 PM at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center, Corner of Golf Club Lane and Eleventh Street. As this is the last club meeting before its summer hiatus, members have long enjoyed a tradition of marking the half year mark with a June wine tasting. "We decided to change the venue a bit this year and if weather permits we will also utilize the outdoor area located in the rear of the building. All and all, it should be a festive evening," shared former Club President, Tom Muscarella.
Club President, Edward Cumming, and members are pleased to announce, Village of Mineola mayor, Jack Martins will be the evening's guest speaker. A graduate of American University and St. John's University School of Law, Martins recently received the County Republican Party designation as candidate for Congress in the Fourth Congressional District where the seat is currently held by Carolyn McCarthy. "Mayor Martin brings a fresh, creative approach to analyzing the problems we all face as taxpayers and works hard at finding beneficial solutions. We are fortunate to have someone with his record desire to serve the public as their Congressman," commented Senator Kemp Hannon.
Mayor Martins enjoys a strong record of accomplishments since taking office there as he worked diligently to restore fiscal integrity and accountability by closing the $33 million budget deficit, which was strangling both the village and its residents. First to develop a debt management plan, Martins authored local ordinances to prohibit permanently the practice of using bonding to pay for tax certiorari, commercial property tax refunds that ate up nearly 10 % of the village budget annually, and began conducting all village business in public view.
Mineola residents soon understood Mayor Martins vision for Mineola's future. By including residents from all aspects of life, Martins created a blueprint for Mineola's future growth and stability. A key component of this was passage of a "development overlay" zoning district allowing developers to invest in his community by making mandatory contributions to the community to help offset the impact on local taxpayers. The highpoint of this was the creation of first-ever affordable senior citizen housing with a preference for local seniors who want to stay in their hometown, but who can no longer afford to maintain their homes - all at no cost to taxpayers.
Mayor Martins has been acknowledged as a leader for his planning and management efforts and has also served on numerous committees both governmental and charitable in an effort to give back to his lifelong community. The Garden City Republican Club is eager for you to join them in welcoming our neighbor, Mayor Jack Martins to Garden City on June 11. Martins and his wife, Paula, are the proud parents of four daughters, especially Caroline Ann who was just born last week. President Ed Cumming, offered, "Our June meeting is always enjoyable and by having Mayor Martins join us, it will help set the stage for our upcoming Designating Petition drive as committee members will be out collecting the required signatures to place Mayor Martins as well as the rest of the Republican team on this November's ballot."
