Flyers vs. Friars In Championship Game

Photo by Newsphoto.com It was the Chaminade Flyers vs the St Anthony's Friars on Thursday night May 22nd at Hofstra as the two teams met for the NSCHSAA chamionship boys lacrosse title. Chaminade was seeking its fourth consecutive title and it took more than regulation for it to happen.

St. Anthony's Dante Fantoni scored with 1:23 left in the fourth to give the Friars an 11-10 lead. The Flyers fought back and with 17 seconds left in the game, Garden City resident and Chaminade junior, Steve Chmil scored the game tying goal which led to sudden death overtime.

St. Anthony's won the faceoff in overtime, but Chaminade goalie Nolan Hickey, another Garden City resident, made a point-blank save on a shot by St Anthony's All-American Mike Chanenchuk. GC's own Alex Fox got possession for the Flyers and bounced a shot in for the dramatic 12-11 win and Chaminade's fourth title.
